What I Learned About Periods: A 9-Year-Old’s Honest Review of Blossomflow’s Book

Before Reading the Book

Hi, my name is Amina. I am 9 years old, and I want to tell you about a book from Blossomflow called Period: What Happens Down There?

Before I read it, I did not know much about periods. I only heard people whispering, and sometimes it made me afraid. I thought it was something bad or scary that happened to girls when they grew up.

At school, sometimes when the topic came up, teachers or older girls would quickly change the subject. That made me even more curious, but also confused. Why did people not want to talk about it? If it was something that happened to every girl, why was it a secret?

What the Book Taught Me

This book explained to me that periods are normal. They are not dirty, and they are not a sickness. Every healthy girl will have them one day.

I learned how to use a pad, when to change it, and how to stay clean. I also read about cramps and why they happen. The pictures and stories in Period: What Happens Down There? made it easy to understand.

The book also taught me that every girl’s period is different. Some girls may get theirs at 9, others at 12 or 13, and that’s okay. It said that some girls may bleed more, some less, and that it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

I also discovered that eating healthy foods, drinking water, and resting during your period can make you feel better. These are small but very helpful things I didn’t know before.

How I Felt After Reading

After reading, I was happy and not afraid anymore. Now I know what will happen in my body and how I can take care of myself. I started talking to my mum and dad about it and now I take the book with me everywhere I go.

I am proud that I learned something important about myself.

The best part is that I don’t feel ashamed anymore. When I hear the word “period,” I don’t hide my face. Instead, I feel proud because I understand what it means.

Why Every Girl Should Read It

I think every girl should have this book. It makes you feel strong and proud of who you are. It helps you understand your body instead of being confused or ashamed.

Some of my friends still believe myths about periods, like not being able to play or touch certain things during that time. But after reading this book, I know those are just old stories and not true. If more girls could read it, they would not be scared when their first period comes.

This book doesn’t just help girls, it can also help parents and teachers. Sometimes adults don’t know the right way to explain periods to children. The book makes it simple, with pictures and words we can understand.

Why Period Education Matters

Amina’s story is just one example, but it reflects the experience of many girls across Africa and beyond. Too many young girls step into puberty without the right information, leaving them anxious, embarrassed, or unprepared when their first period arrives.

Without proper education:

  • Some girls miss school during their periods because they don’t know how to manage it.
  • Others fall for harmful myths, like thinking periods are dirty or shameful.
  • Many girls feel alone because no one explained what was happening to them.

Books like Period: What Happens Down There? give children the language, tools, and confidence to embrace this natural stage of life.

Conclusion

Amina’s story shows us something powerful — when girls are given the right knowledge, fear turns into confidence. What started as whispers and confusion became clarity, strength, and pride because of one simple tool: Education.

Periods are not a curse, and they are not something to hide. They are a natural part of life, and when explained in the right way, they can become a source of dignity instead of shame.

At Blossomflow Empowerment Foundation, we believe that giving young girls books, pads, and open conversations is more than just education, it’s empowerment. Every girl deserves to feel prepared, safe, and proud of her body.

Because when a girl understands her period, she doesn’t just learn about her body, she learns to embrace her future with courage.
