Blossomflow Foundation Champions the Fight against Period Poverty in Lagos: Empowers 300 Women with Menstrual Health Education and Supplies
Period Poverty in Lagos: Blossomflow Foundation’s Inaugural Outreach Program
In a powerful display of unity and solidarity, Blossomflow Foundation‘s inaugural outreach program held on 14 March, 2024 in Lagos State-Nigeria proved to be a monumental success, leaving a lasting impact on the local community. The event, held at the vibrant Oniru Market, brought together market leaders, community members, friends, and a dedicated team of volunteers, all rallying behind the noble cause of combating period poverty.
Addressing the Scale of Period Poverty: Statistics and Impact
According to the World Bank, they estimate that over 500 million women and girls worldwide lack adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management while other statistics tell us that about 37 million Nigerian women and girls are facing period poverty. With the invaluable contribution of 25 dedicated volunteers and the full support of the Oniru Police Station, Blossomflow Foundation’s outreach program was able to reach over 300 young girls and women, providing them with a two-month supply of menstrual pads and hygiene. But the impact extended beyond mere distribution; it was a platform for education, empowerment, and advocacy.
Empowering Women: Education and Support
Throughout the day, attendees participated in educational sessions on menstrual health and hygiene, engaged in interactive discussions aimed at breaking taboos surrounding menstruation, and received mini packs of food items to support their well-being. It was a holistic approach to addressing the multifaceted challenges of period poverty, rooted in compassion, dignity, and empowerment.
Voices of Gratitude: Beneficiaries Share Their Stories
A beneficiary of the initiative, speaking in the local Yoruba language, expressed gratitude for the support provided by Blossomflow Foundation: “The support provided by Blossomflow Foundation has been very helpful. Not only have they supplied us with essential menstrual hygiene products and food supplies, but they have also empowered us with knowledge and resources to manage our menstrual health with confidence and dignity.”
Collective Action for Change: Acknowledging Volunteers
The outreach was made possible by the unwavering support and active participation of notable volunteers who lent their time and expertise to this cause, led by Mrs. Joan Faluyi (Founder, Blossomflow Foundation). Among them were; Adejumoke Oyedun (MD/CEO, ACME Multitech Services Limited), Nnenna Maduabum (MD, Numad Energy Integrated Services), Charlotte Essiet (MD, ELint Systems), Monioluwaninuohungbogbo Shonibare (MD, Hush and Hush Florals and Events), Mr. Lugano K.O. Newman, Dr. Lara Ajaji and the staff of Offshore Dimensions Ltd. Their collective efforts under the sun symbolized a powerful stand against period poverty, one woman at a time.
Lasting Impact: Extending the Reach Beyond Oniru Market
As the sun set on Oniru Market, it was evident that the impact of Blossomflow Foundation’s outreach program would resonate far beyond its conclusion. It was a testament to the power of community, compassion, and collective action in effecting meaningful change. With each pad distributed, each conversation sparked, and each woman empowered, the foundation took a significant step towards its mission of eradicating period poverty in Nigeria.
In conclusion, Blossomflow Foundation’s dedication to combating period poverty in Lagos is unwavering. Through its inaugural outreach program and ongoing efforts, the foundation has made significant strides in empowering both women and girls in the local communities. By providing essential menstrual hygiene products, education, and support, Blossomflow Foundation addresses the multifaceted challenges of period poverty with compassion and determination.
