OUR STORY
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
The inception of Blossomflow Foundation can be traced back to a poignant encounter experienced by Mrs. Joan Faluyi, the founder and convener of the organization.
While on what was to be a routine grocery shopping trip, Mrs. Faluyi's attention was caught by a young girl, barely a teenager, who seemed lost and visibly distressed. The girl's attire was stained, and her eyes were filled with an anxious plea for help. Compassionately, Mrs. Faluyi approached her and asked if there was any way she could be of assistance. With a hesitance in her voice, the girl disclosed her need for sanitary pads, yet she lacked the funds to purchase them.
This simple, yet profound interaction marked a turning point for Mrs. Faluyi. She promptly guided the girl to select the needed sanitary products and covered the costs. The overwhelming gratitude from the girl, expressed through her tearful 'thank yous', resonated deeply with Mrs. Faluyi. Later, sitting in the comfort of her home, the disparity between her daughters' lives and the struggles of the girl she had just assisted was strikingly apparent.
The staggering statistics on period poverty in Nigeria only further solidified the urgency of the matter for Mrs. Faluyi. Realizing that her act of kindness, although impactful for a moment, was but a temporary solution, she was propelled into action. It became her mission to create a sustainable impact and provide consistent access to menstrual hygiene products to those in need.but the impact it had on that young girl's life was immeasurable.
Sitting at my kitchen table, surrounded by the comfort of my home, I
couldn't shake the image of the young girl's grateful eyes from my
mind. My girls, who have never known the struggle of lacking basic
necessities like sanitary pads, were upstairs, safe and sound. The
disparity between their world and that of the girl I met today was overwhelming.
Reflecting on that moment, I realized that the relief I provided was
temporary. The harsh reality is that many young girls face this struggle
every month without the means to afford menstrual hygiene products.
Statistics reveal the gravity of this issue: over 37 million women and
girls of reproductive age in Nigeria can’t afford menstrual hygiene
products. This means one in four girls is unable to afford sanitary products,
and one in seven have to borrow due to cost. This encounter was
a turning point for me, awakening me to the silent battles many young
girls face regarding menstrual hygiene.
Thus, Blossomflow Foundation was born out of the need to address the silent struggles faced by many young girls in managing their menstrual hygiene with dignity. What started with distributing sanitary pads evolved into a movement—focusing on dignity, education, and breaking the cycle of silence and shame that surrounds menstruation.
Today, our foundation stands as a testament to the power of individual action and community solidarity. We are committed to fighting period poverty and uplifting the lives of countless young girls. Join us as we continue to break barriers and create transformative impacts worldwide.
